Black Royal Swing

by Steven J. Serafiani

play that jazz my good man!
ragtime to swing for the ragamuffin clan packed in a
sardine speakeasy can
we all belong
we all belong
I can feel a literary revolution comin’ on
I see it in the way that man smokes his cigarette and beats on his wool
I can hear it in the gal at the horseshoe oak soaked
in her passionate syllable breakdown flow
so play that jazz
so we can once again pen our jazz in syncopated key taps
and bellow our staggered sheets on corners for anyone to hear.
