the counter

by Steven J. Serafiani

when I was little
I told people that I wanted to be a counter
most boys say fireman or cowboy or some bullshit
I said counter
realistic even at a young age
I’m 23 different jobs deep in 14 years
and in my current
I count my steps
when I push my file cart
I count the minutes
till I can get home and sleep
I count a small billfold
when I cash my check
I count how many hips I can sway with
till I cure my loneliness
I count how many fingers
when I water my liver
I count
I count I count
I count
till the day
I retire.
